Velvet Wells

2022 JRG Emerging Artist Award 

 

Velvet Wells (they) is a proud Black, autistic, queer, disabled, velvet-voiced, professional devised theatre artist living in Ottawa. 

 

Velvet’s professional break was Mr. Dressup (1988). They’ve honed their identity and purpose across multiple disciplines, ever since. In 2022, they were named Emerging Artist by two arts organizations -- 2022 Ottawa Fringe Festival and JRG Society for the Arts.

 

Velvet created Velvet Duke Productions, a transmedia company to feature their devised theatre pieces in live and virtual spaces.
